Nettle Side Effects

Nettle is used to treat many conditions. It's also a great diuretic for weight loss. There are some side effects of nettle that you should be aware of though.

There are some mild side effects that are possible when using nettle such as:
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Sweating
  • Increased urination

These side effects are mild and are not likely to occur, but there is still a chance that you may experience them. If you touch the plant, a slight skin irritation is possible.

If you are diabetic, you should be careful because nettle can alter blood sugar levels. You may want to ask your doctor before you begin taking stinging nettle supplements.

If you are pregnant, it's best if you do not take nettle. Nettle can cause you to have a miscarriage. When you are beast-feeding, also do not take nettle because the effects on infants are unknown. Females may experience changes in their menstrual cycle with the use of nettle.

If you have bladder control issues or kidney problems, you may not want to take nettle because it's a diuretic. It increases urination because it helps to get rid of extra bloating and water weight.

Nettle can alter blood pressure, so if you are taking blood pressure medication or a blood thinner, it may be best if you do not take nettle.

If you are taking medications for minimizing inflammation, talk to your doctor before deciding to supplement with nettle.
