Softee Coconut Oil Review

About the product

I've been reading about coconut oil and the benefits when it comes to hair health and growth. I was looking for a product to try out and I found this Softee Coconut Oil Hair & Scalp Conditioner. It turns out that this product isn't coconut oil at all. It's really just petroleum that smells like artificial coconuts. It doesn't even smell like real coconut oil or real coconuts.

A great way to tell that this product isn't coconut oil (besides looking at the ingredients list) is that it's texture is the same even if you put it in the refrigerator. Coconut oil hardens when it gets cold. It looks pretty much like the inside of a coconut. It gets really white and solid.

The ingredients

When you turn it around the first ingredient of Softee coconut oil is petrolatum. It contains mostly this ingredient with very few oils that are good for hair. In fact here is a list of ingredients:
  • Petrolatum
  • Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil
  • Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil
  • Paraffin
  • Mineral Oil
  • Fragrance
  • BHT

What this means for you is that you are using a very heavy, waxy oil. It's not like virgin unrefined coconut oil. It doesn't just soak up into the hair all nice and everything. It's very heavy. This oil should be used differently than virgin coconut oil.

Don't be fooled by the front of the product which tells you it's "Pure coconut oil". Real unrefined virgin coconut oil can be bought for the same cost as this stuff, so you're better off using it instead. It doesn't clog pores, it soaks into the hair, and makes the hair thicker and grow faster. Indian women use it on their hair for a reason.

Softee coconut oil is really only good for if you want some petroleum that smells good. It's certainly not something that anyone should put in their hair. Go with real oils that you can cook with. If you can eat it, it's ingredients are pure and safe enough for your hair. If you can't eat it, likely it's not good for your hair because it has chemicals and it's not natural.

If you're looking for coconut oil that will be great for your hair, make sure it's unrefined. It will specify whether it's refined or unrefined on the label.
