Does Lemon Lighten Hair?

Does lemon lighten hair? If so, is it damaging?

Lemon does lighten hair. However, not everyone will experience lightening when using lemon juice on their hair. Some people with dark hair may not notice a difference. Also, it's said that if your hair is healthy (not damaged or dyed) that the lemon may not work. It may work best on those who have damaged hair.

It is a way to lighten hair, but it's not completely safe for hair. It may damage the hair because it dries your hair out. It depends on how well you take care of your hair. If you wash your hair daily, blow dry, heat style, dye, and use chemicals on your hair then lemon will only add to the dryness and damage. If you avoid heat styling and chemicals and you tend to condition and do oil treatments then your hair will not become as damaged. Of course, if you do take care of your hair, like I mentioned earlier, the lemon may not be able to lighten your hair because your hair is healthy.

If you want an alternate way to lighten your hair, you could use chamomile tea. I have used in on my hair and it is successful in lightening hair a couple of shades depending on what color you start with. Of course, it won't help you go from brown to blonde but it will help those who are already some shade of blonde go even lighter or more golden. I have a whole article about how to lighten your hair with chamomile tea.

If you want to use lemon, I would suggest putting virgin coconut oil in your hair afterwards and leave it in for at least a few hours or more. This will help replenish your hair because you know that dryness turns into split ends and damage so the way to prevent it is to add natural oils to your hair and do oil treatments.
