Kelp Side Effects

Sea kelp is a great herb to help boost weight loss. There may be some side effects from taking sea kelp as a supplement. Keep in mind that the main component of kelp that helps you with weight loss is iodine. If you have too much iodine in your diet, you may experience:
  • acne
  • thyroid imbalance
Be very careful of where you buy your kelp supplements. If the kelp you buy comes from a highly polluted place in the ocean, there will likely be some extra ingredients in your kelp supplement that you do not want in there. Your kelp could contain metals like arsenic. A good company to trust is this one. They really keep the quality of their products up to standard.

If you have bought a kelp supplement and have experienced any of the following symptoms, it may have been contaminated with arsenic:
  • confusion
  • memory loss
  • loss of hair
  • tiredness
Too much arsenic is linked with death. Don't let this scare you away from kelp supplements. They are perfectly fine if you get them from a reputable company like the one listed above.

As with any supplement, you may be allergic. Even the safest herbal remedy is a danger to someone who has an allergy to it. If you experience the following symptoms, you may be allergic to sea kelp supplements:
  • trouble breathing
  • itchy eyes
  • swelling of body parts (hands, throat, face, etc)
  • rashes
Do not take sea kelp with pain medications, blood thinners, or blood sugar lowering medications. Avoid kelp if you are pregnant or nursing. Use of kelp over an extended period of time can effect your body's ability to absorb certain nutrients.

The best time to use kelp is if you have a deficiency in iodine and it's effecting your thyroid functioning.
