Angelica (Dong Quai) Side Effects

Angelica is a plant that is used for medicinal purposes. All parts of the plant are useful in some way. Angelica has many great uses and benefits. There are also some side effects you could experience while using angelica. Not everyone experiences side effects and most people will not have a problem.

Angelica could cause a few minor side effects such as:
  • Upset stomach
  • Gas
  • Loose stools
Some other side effects that are even more rare:
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Severe allergy to angelica

If you develop symptoms of an allergy such as swelling, itching, and rashes, you should discontinue use. If the allergic reaction seems to be severe, you should go to the doctor or ER.

Angelica is sometimes used to help bring a woman's period when she is late. Be aware of this if you are using angelica. It could cause changes in your menstrual cycle.

If you are pregnant, you should not use angelica for this reason. It could cause a miscarriage. If you are nursing, do not use angelica.

Angelica root cream that is used on the skin seems to be safe.

If you use angelica, make sure you are careful in sunlight because it can make your skin more sensitive. You may get a sunburn more easily if you use angelica. Wear sun block if you need to do so. Be extra careful if you already have fair skin.
