Anise Side Effects

Anise seeds and oil are used to make medicine. Also the leaf and root are sometimes used when making medicine. There are many great benefits of using anise. Anise is sometimes used as flavoring in certain foods. It also has some side effects.

You should read the instructions for anise very carefully. Do not use more than the recommended dosage or you may experience:
  • Nausea
  • Seizures
  • Vomiting
  • Pulmonary edema
Never ingest pure anise oil. Before applying anise oil to the skin, make sure it has been diluted first. Anise ointment is fine because it has been diluted to form an ointment.

If you start to feel symptoms of an allergic reaction, stop using anise. This includes trouble breathing, swelling, rashes, etc. If these symptoms become too severe, you may need to seek emergency medical care.

Do not supplement with anise if you are pregnant or nursing. If anise just so happens to be in some food that you are eating, it will be fine. Supplements, however, contain large quantities of anise and you should avoid using those.

Do not use anise if you have:
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine cancer

Anise can aggravate these conditions because of hormone levels.
