How To Grow Avena (Oatstraw)

If you want to grow avena (oaststraw), you must remember that if tempertaures are too cold, the plant will not do well. If you are unsure of how cold the winter will be, it is best to plant your avena seeds in the spring.

You can plant your oatstraw in either partial sun or full sun. It does not matter. Pick a place in your garden where the plant will look nice. Keep in mind that oatstraw grows to be up to four feet tall.

First you will break up the ground. Then you will mix manure with the soil. The seeds will be planted about half an inch into the ground. Just take the seeds in your hand and sprinkle them over the area. Now cover up with soil.

You will want to water your oatstraw only when there is a lack of rain. For the most part, avena will take care of itself and the natural rain is good enough. Avena is drought resistant. Only water your plants if you see that the soil is dry and it has not rained in a bit.

You can harvest your oats in about 4 months. You can choose to use them for their health benefits. Your cats may also like them. Oatstraw contains nutrients that most cats need, but they do not get it. You may want to feed the oats to your cats to keep them healthy. Keep in mind that if stray cats live near your home, they may try to eat your oatstraw as it's growing in the garden.
