If you are used to a lot of caffeine (most Americans are), you can expect minimal difficulties here. You most likely won't even feel the caffeine except for an increase in energy. Those who are caffeine sensitive should watch out though.
If you take a lot of cocoa, you may experience:
- Faster heart rate
- Increase in urination
- Difficulty sleeping
- Nervousness
- Constipation
- Upset stomach
- Headaches
If you are allergic to cocoa, do not take a cocoa supplement. If you see symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue use. If you are pregnant or nursing, normal daily amounts are okay but taking a cocoa supplement is not advised. Doses above 200 mg of caffeine during pregnancy are bad for your baby.
If you have acid reflux, you may not want to take a cocoa supplement because it could worsen your condition. Those who are known to have anxiety may not react well to the extra caffeine. If you have heart conditions that require your intake of caffeine to be low, do not take a cocoa supplement. If you are having surgery soon, do not take cocoa supplements.
