Alfalfa Side Effects

Alfalfa may have side effects, interactions, and warnings that you should be aware of before taking it as a supplement daily. Always check out the known side effects of any herbal remedy before you make a decision.

The seeds of alfalfa contain stachydrine and homostachydrine. This can lead to a miscarriage if you are pregnant. Most of the alfalfa herbal supplements do not contain that, but if you want to be on the safe side and avoid it, that would be fine.

Other people who might have a problem with alfalfa seeds are people with lupus and auto immune diseases. Again, if you get alfalfa leaf capsules, there shouldn't be any seeds included, so you would be fine.

If you tend to burn in the sun, alfalfa may make it worse for you. Alfalfa makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so be sure to use extra protection when you know you will be in direct sunlight for any amount of time.

If you will be getting any organ transplants, avoid the use of alfalfa. Do not eat alfalfa seeds if you have breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, uterine cancer, and uterine fibroids. If you have diabetes, as always, monitor blood sugar when you take alfalfa.
