Psyllium Husks Side Effects

Your body needs fiber and psyllium is one of the most common forms of soluble fiber. Specifically, you should be getting about 35 grams of fiber per day, but that doesn't mean you won't experience side effects. When you increase your fiber intake rapidly, you may experience some side effects. You may feel:
  • Some minor bloating
  • Gas
  • Loose stools
  • Abdominal discomfort
To prevent these side effects, introduce psyllium fiber slowly to your body. You don't want to take the full dosage on the first day. Gradually increase when you feel ready. After a week or two, you should be able to take the full dose. Also, to decrease side effects, drink a lot of water.

You should drink plenty of water with your psyllium husks. You should be getting 8 glasses of water per day. Take at least a glass of water with each dose of psyllium capsules. If you are mixing psyllium powder in water, you should use a whole glass and possibly drink extra water afterwards.

You can never have enough water when you are taking fiber. It will increase the effectiveness of the fiber supplement and also it will help to get rid of any side effects.

Those with diabetes are urged to monitor their blood sugar while taking psyllium since it may cause changes. If you take prescription medications, take them a few hours before taking psyllium. This is because psyllium can actually decrease the absorption of medicines.

For those who are pregnant and nursing, psyllium is said to be perfectly safe and fine.

If you start to feel symptoms of an allergic reaction and you believe psyllium is causing it, discontinue taking the psyllium supplement until you find out what the cause is. Typical allergy symptoms include rashes, swelling, itchy eyes, etc.

Psyllium Husks Weight Loss

Psyllium husks come from North Africa, parts of Asia, and parts of Europe. Psyllium is a type of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber can help you in many ways with your weight loss goals. Here is how psyllium husks can help you with weight loss:
  • Feeling of fullness
  • Less hunger throughout the day
  • Cleans colon
  • Improve digestion
  • Stabilizes blood sugar
  • Flushes out fats
You should be getting 8 ounces of water per day. You should take psyllium about 30 minutes before each meal with a full glass of water. Make sure you drink plenty of water, because the water will increase it's effectiveness. Once in the stomach, it will form a thick gel with the water you have consumed. You will feel a little full before you even eat your meal.

Psyllium will help prevent some of those calories in your meal from being absorbed by your body. This is good because it will help you lose weight. While in the intestines, psyllium will act like a sponge. It will go through and absorb heavy metals, sludge, and everything else in your intestines that is preventing you from losing weight.

Psyllium can help keep you fuller for longer if taken like I described. Also it helps to stabilize blood sugar which reduces cravings throughout the day. It helps regulate your digestive system and prevents some fat and calories from being absorbed by your body. It then flushes them out of your system.

Psyllium can be taken in capsule form or you can mix it in water and drink it (such as Metamucil). I prefer to take mine in capsule form, because drinking it day after day gets old quickly. I paid about $8 at Swansonvitamins.com for my psyllium. There are 300 capsules in the bottle.

If you are serious about losing weight, fiber should be in your diet. It will help to rid your body of bacteria and parasites in the intestines that you probably are completely unaware of.
