Spirulina Side Effects

Spirulina is packed with vitamins and nutrients. It has many great health benefits, including helping you to lose weight. Spirulina may also have some side effects that you should be aware of before you begin taking it. You should know and trust the brand of spirulina that you buy. That is because this blue-green algae can be contaminated. Never buy from a brand unless you have read reviews first.

If your spirulina is contaminated, you may experience:
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Liver damage
  • Shock
  • Stomach pains
  • Increased heart rate
  • Weak body
  • Thirst
  • Possibly death
Remember that you are adding something new that you have never eaten before. Obviously there is a chance for some mild stomach cramps or changes in the digestive system. If these things persist and do not get better and you begin experiencing other symptoms, you may need to visit your doctor. If you have any of those symptoms, it is possible that you have bought some spirulina that is contaminated with heavy metals or bacteria. Do not use that brand anymore. If the symptoms are severe, get yourself to the doctor.

Spirulina that is not contaminated is generally safe to use. You may experience the following side effects:
  • Slight elevation in body temperature
  • Hiccups
  • Changes in digestive system (greenish feces, mild cramps)
If you have anemia, you may feel some dizziness or tiredness.

If you are pregnant or nursing, do not take spirulina. Not enough studies have been done to make any conclusions about pregnancy and spirulina.

If you have any auto-immune disease, spirulina could worsen your condition. Do not take spirulina. You may want to try another supplement to achieve your desired goal.

Do not take spirulina if you have phenylketonuria.

To minimize side effects, you should start with a small amount of spirulina and work your way up to the full dosage. Remember that if you have bothersome side effects after the first few days, you may want to just try something else.
