Fish Oil Side Effects

Fish oil is a great supplement, but you may want to be aware of any side effects which could occur. There are no real serious side effects of fish oil, but there are still some things you should keep in mind and consider.

You should be aware of the possibility of mercury being in the fish oil supplement. This is not likely because health companies purify these supplements to avoid law suits, but it is still a possibility. Bigger fish are known to have more contaminants. You can greatly decrease your chances of getting a supplement with mercury in it if you choose to take Krill oil. Krill is a smaller fish with less of a chance to be contaminated.

This is not to steer you away from taking fish oil, because like I stated, companies spend a lot of time making sure their supplements are cleaned, purified, and tested. My personal preference would be Swanson Vitamins, but you can choose any company that makes you feel safe.

If you are pregnant or nursing, ask your doctor first. It is said to be safe for pregnant and nursing women when you take 3 grams or less per day.

Some people complain about having a "fish burp" after taking fish oil. Not all fish oil supplements make you burp up a fishy taste, but some definitely do. Some also cause bad breath. It is said that you are less likely to have the fishy taste if you take krill oil.

Taking more than 3 grams of fish oil per day is not safe. You may experience some bad side effects. Do not take more than the recommended dosage of fish oil.

If you don't take fish oil with a meal, you are more likely to experience some bad side effects. You may feel:
  • nausea
  • heartburn
  • diarrhea
  • nosebleeds
  • rash
These are not common, but possible when you take fish oil without food.

Do not take a fish oil supplement if:
  • You are allergic to fish
  • Have liver disease
  • Familial adenomatous polyposis
Fish oil is generally safe for most people especially when bought from a good and reputable company. It has many health benefits including weight loss and fat burning.

Fish Oil Weight Loss

Fish oil is needed to keep your fat burning as efficient as possible. Studies show that people who take fish oil or some sort of omega fatty acids supplement have less obesity and tend to weight less. This is because our bodies need these good fats to help burn off the bad fats. Here are the things fish oil can do for you to help you lose weight:
  • Prevents formation of new fat cells
  • Balances hormones
  • Raises metabolism
  • Stimulates brown fat stores
  • Suppresses appetite
  • Increased energy
  • Regulates insulin
For 12 weeks, two groups were in a study. They both did aerobic exercise three times a week and one group was given fish oil while the other group didn't get fish oil. The group that took fish oil had much more weight loss. It targeted specifically the fat around their stomachs.

Increased insulin levels promote fat storage. Fish oil helps tremendously with this problem. When you balance your insulin levels, you will see an increase in weight loss. You may not even know that your insulin levels are out of wack, but if you eat the average American diet, your insulin levels are definitely off and that promotes fat storage. Another study was done where patients were given the same diet, except one group was given fish oil. The group that was given fish oil burned significantly more fat per day.

If you are trying to lose weight, it would be wise of you to take either fish oil or flaxseed oil in order to get your essential fatty acids. You will lose weight much faster among other health benefits that fish oil provides.
